A key issue is protecting the school year for the students and the parents. In June 2004, the TK Board of Education unanimously approved a school calendar of only 175 school days, down from previously state required 180 days. I believe that taking days of school away from students is detrimental, not only to the students who lose those days of instruction, but also to the teachers and the parents. The loss of a week of school effects the gifted students, the at risk students, and all students at all levels. In order for the schools to work, the students must be in school. Some districts in the area have cut their calendars further to 165 days or less. As a school board member, I would work diligently to ensure that a full 180 days of schools were offered to all students. |
