MEAP Scores

How can the district improve MEAP scores and in what area would you like to see students focus on most?

The schools should work to improve scores in all areas at all levels.

Based on the recent high school and middle school MEAP scores, I believe focusing on alignment of the curriculum and instruction in social studies to the state standards is very important.

In 2003 and 2004, less than half of the students met or exceeded the standards for social studies and over a quarter failed to show even basic proficiency.

Understanding how the country works, the way society behaves, and what history has to teach is very important for the strength of our community and nation.

To improve scores, all the teachers need to be trained so they know exactly what the Michigan’s standards are for social studies.

The teachers then need time to work together adjust their curriculum and develop highly effective teaching strategies to teach the students exactly what they need to know.

One possibility is training teachers how to use computers to teach the social studies concepts.
