Over the past five years, I have become increasingly involved in helping Wayland Union to become a district of excellence. I’ve initiated efforts for imporvement within my classroom, my building, with teahers, with administrators, and with the board of education. For the last several years, I've attended every Wayland school board meeting.  I've discussed various issues with the board members and presented to the board on several occasions.

I was the only teacher involved in the search for our new superintendent, Eivor Swan, previously of Kelloggsville. A recent effort I made in the school district is to encourage the development of an all day everyday Kindergarten program. After having conversations with various members of the school community in Wayland, it looks like all day everyday Kindergarten is on the horizon, and may be implemented as early as next year. Ms. Swan has done an excellent job of advocating for this with the staff and the parents.

My interest in Thornapple Kellogg Schools is that I hope to some day send children to the district. I have many friends and neighbors, who currently send their students there. I think it is important that TK schools offer the very best program for all students, at all grade levels.

If I were elected to the Board of Education, I would be a strong proponent for many initiatives to improve the already high quality of TK schools. One initiative would be to look into bringing an all day everyday Kindergarten option to the parents of the district. Kindergarten is an essential place for children to learn how to “do” school. It acts as a springboard to get the kids in gear for the challenges of reading, writing, doing math, and thinking critically and logically about their world.

My overall goal is to bring high quality education to all students. There are many other programs and efforts I would support in TK schools. I would encourage the preparation of high quality nutritional food offerings throughout the district. I would be a strong proponent to align the curriculum to support the expansion of Advanced Placement courses at the high school. I would also look closely at graduation requirements to ensure the parents that their children are being challenged and learning as much as the district has to teach.
