School Days The Law Pros Cons Affects Schools States Countries Keeping Days Changing Law Awareness References |
Address to a Board of Education. There is an epidemic facing the children of Michigan. School districts are eliminating student days from the school year. This is causing inequality from school to school. Many children are being cheated of the high quality education they all deserve. Michigan public schools are eliminating days from their school year. Some schools had offered 183 or more days only a few years ago. Many districts are now offering only 175 days. Some schools will schedule as few as 163 days. Teachers will be forced to change. Some will attempt to squeeze more teaching into one day. Others will eliminate lessons and projects all together. Less days will be available to help students. Students have less days to learn. Many will go to school longer each day. Those who struggle in school will loose opportunities to learn. What students forget over the summer will increase as vacation lengthens. Less learning deprives students of education they need to excel on college entrance tests. Parents will be deprived of schooling they have come to expect from their children. Child care must be found for each day a school eliminates. Children home alone and with more idle hands may turn to mischief. You can do something about this crisis. Contact your legislators and school board members. Write letters and articles for newspapers. Spread the word about how Michigan's children are being short changed. |
