Since learning about peak oil, I've began to take action to educate myself and others to the issue, the consequences and the solutions.  The list below includes both things that I have done to educate others, and things I have done or attended to educate myself.

2005

  • August 31, Wayland Union High School, teaching staff, powerpoint on peak oil and education, 10 minutes, ~180 people
  • September 1, Thornapple Township EMS Building, "The Oil Factor" screening followed by discussion, powerpoint on peak oil, and additional discussion, 3 hours, ~20 people
  • September 23-25, Community Solutions Conference, "U.S. Conference on Peak Oil and Community Solutions", Yellow Springs, Ohio, 25 hours
  • September 28, Grand Rapids, attend talk by Robert Kennedy on corporations and the environment
  • October 4, press release about screening of "The End of Suburbia", published in at least three local papers
  • October 13, Wayland Union High School, "The End of Suburbia" screening and discussion, 3 hours, ~35 people
  • October 14, publish first issue of Our Local Future about peak oil and upcoming events, about 30 email recipients
  • October 14, press release "Community Members Speak Out" about screening with announcement about "The Oil Factor" screening in Hastings
  • October 15, Standale, attend Aspiring Activists II
  • October 18, Hastings High School, "The Oil Factor" screening and discussion, 2 hours, 15 people
  • October 19, Grand Rapids, Region 9 - MEA/NEA Council, peak oil and education, 10 minutes, 50 people
  • October 28, Lansing, House Office Building, talked to half a dozen different staffers of representatives. on a one-on-one basis about peak oil; also attempted to speak to staff for the Governor, but none was available
  • November 4, Local First, Grand Rapids, attend talk by Michael Shuman on the small-mart revolution
  • November 5, Michigan Education Association, representation assembly, Lansing, introduce new business item on buying locally, 300 people
  • November 9, email to media "Middleville Couple - Wayland Teacher -  Attend World Oil Conference", published in at least two local papers
  • November 10-12, ASPO-USA World Oil Conference, Denver, Colorado, 25 hours, keynote speakers Matt Simmons and Roscoe Bartlett
  • November 12, Boulder Valley Relocalization, attend talk by Julian Darley of Global Public Media
  • November 14, Wayland Union Middle School, talk about trip to Denver and conference for students, 10 minutes, ~100 students
  • November 18, response to economist predictions on Jack Lessenberry show
  • November 21, interview with Julie Makarewicz for Grand Rapids Press on peak oil, 1 hour, see link below
  • November 23, press release on peak oil, Denver conference, and upcoming talks, send to local papers, pubished in at least three
  • November 28, Grand Rapids, Wealthy Theater, radio interview with Jeff Smith for Catalyst Radio on peak oil, 15 minutes, see link below
  • November 30, press release edited as commentary for Allegan County News
  • December 1, Couple Takes Reins in World Oil Crisis, Grand Rapids Press

  • December 2, Grand Rapids, St. Marks Church, powerpoint talk on peak oil and solutions, also recorded for TV broadcast on cable access, 1 hour, 30 people
  • December 7, Grand Rapids, attend premiere of Chris Bedford's documentary "What Will We Eat?", ask question on peak oil and food security
  • December 10, set up Michigan Peak Oil group in yahoo
  • December 11, Hope Church of the Bretheren, Freeport, talk on peak oil and solutions, 1 hour, ~30 people
