Next to water, oil is the most important liquid on the planet.  It is used both for its energy as well as its chemical ingredients.  Society depends on readily available oil in ever increasing amounts.

Oil reserves are a finite, limited resource.  Globally, they are being depleted at over 80 million barrels per day.  At some point, oil extraction will reach its highest level or peak.  After this, extraction will begin a permanent decline.

Demand for oil increases every year.  After oil extraction peaks, supply will begin to decline.  In order to prevent shortages, prices will rise to decrease the demand.

Gasoline is one very important product of oil.  As the supply of oil decreases, so will the suppy of gasoline.  In the past two years, the price of gasoline in the United States has doubled.  As the price rises, people will have to change their spending habits.  Some will choose to use less gasoline.  Others will choose to continue using the same amount.  They will have less money to spend other places.
