Peak oil requires new ideas to meet the needs of people and the earth. Here is a quick list of needs and possible solutions. Water - pumps that are simple to produce and repair, perhaps akin to those being used in Africa Heating - passive solar additions to homes to keep interior temperature in a comfortable range year round, 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, new homes built with passive solar, deciduous trees planted on sunny side of house for cooling in summer Cooling - addition to home where a cool mass of ice can be used to provide for food storage of perishable items Food Production - high productivity organic horticulture or permaculture gardens, many local gardens and farms, home and local greenhouses for year round growing Food Storage - addition to home where food can be stored, one to two years of food helpful for weather related poor growing seasons Electricity Generation - using solar energy to heat a mass and using movement of heat or a fluid to move a mechanism to generate electricity, wind and water used when possible, primary need is using a very simple setup to convert solar produced heat into electricity Electricity Storage - for home using pumped water storage and generation with an upper and lower resiviour Transportation - super high economy bikes with attachable energy assist devices, larger vehicles with energy storage for transportation in springs, compressed air, gravitational potential, and others, ability to move across jagged gravel or broken roadways Health - composting toilets and sanitation to minimize disease Education Campaign - to raise awareness of the issue and all its problems, as well as solutions and strategies for transition Sharing System - a local barter or money system to foster the exchange of goods and services that promotes initiative and freedom
