Parents and teachers
alike struggle with the dilemma of how to help a student become
independent. We have learned that
sometimes it’s good to step in with assistance, and other times it’s best to
step back and allow students to work it out for themselves. In one
sense, the struggle is the lesson. Developing every
student’s confidence and promoting the self-initiative that will carry them
on to life-long learning is not furthered by giving help when it isn’t really
needed. On the other hand, parents of
adolescents don’t need to worry about stalling the natural desire of each
young person to “cut the apron strings.”
Show them you’re willing to spend your time with them while they do
their homework. |
