Presidentís Update 3-20-2012
PROTECT OUR JOBS CAMPAIGN
The MEA has joined with over 25 unions to launch the Protect Our Jobs campaign, with the goal of amending Michigan's constitution to protect collective bargaining rights and strengthen the middle class.
This campaign represents the most important effort that MEA has been involved in since the passing of the Public Employment Relations Act (PERA) that gave us collective bargaining rights in the 1960s. Our work now is to collect 332,000 valid signatures to prevent the erosion of those rights.
All members of MEA Local 1 and the 6-E Coordinating Council are working to gather signatures to put this amendment on the ballot in November, 2012. The relentless attacks that began over a year ago in the legislature against the rights of Michiganís middle class continue with over 80 more anti-labor bills ready to be moved into law.† The passage of this amendment will stop these attacks from becoming law.
Working together, we will save the American Dream of public schools that educate our kids to be successful in life; good jobs for workers that pay a living wage and include medical and retirement benefits; and a safe and secure retirement for seniors where they donít have to worry about losing Medicare or Social Security.
