                                                                  August 2011

As the new school year begins, the more than 5,000 highly trained professional educators and education support personnel of the 6-E Coordinating Council and MEA-NEA Local 1 are going back to doing what we do best: educating our students to help them lead full, rich lives as productive citizens.

At Local 1, we look forward to a new year of continuing to provide support services for all of our members.  By helping our members achieve fair and equitable contracts with educationally sound working conditions, they can focus on what’s best for the kids in providing the finest educational experience possible.

This year, we have weathered an unprecedented assault against public education and what is left of the middle class. We have seen a coordinated statewide and nationwide movement to take public tax dollars away from public schools. These funds have been given to corporations and their CEO’s, with little or no guidelines as to how they use these funds. In Michigan, our public schools have dramatically reduced their budgets, leading to devastating losses in staff and services for our children.  Through rallies, phone calls, letters, and direct contact with legislators, we are continuing to get our message out that budget cuts and tax giveaways to corporations do not create jobs and only hurt our children.

For more information on how you can help end the attacks on public education and Michigan’s middle class, please visit our Facebook page (Michigan Education Association Local 1).

Please contact me anytime if you have any questions or would like to arrange a guest speaker from Local 1 to come speak to your group about issues affecting public education and our students.

Sincerely,

John Duffy
