Welcome back to school after a well needed vacation! As soon as we were back to school, the MEA faced another challenge in the Race to the Top initiative and the funding involved with it. In the end, because so many unanswered questions concerning the RTTT, the MEA strongly suggested that no local EA’s sign the agreement. By the time the dateline came to sign, many school boards had also agreed that signing such a far reaching proposal was not wise either. Here are my 2010 wishes for Local 1: 1. Contracts in the nine ESP units and eight EA units will be settled. 2. Changes in funding so that all the schools in the state of Michigan will receive what they should in order to run the best programs for Michigan’s students. 3. A governor, state house and state senate, and state Supreme Court elected that will be favorable to public schools and public school teachers. 4. There will be public knowledge and undestanding of the amount of money local school boards spend in hiring outside lawyers to bargain contracts that current administrators ought to be bargaining. 5. The good working relationship with the MISD and the Macomb County Federation group will continue.
