The annual Michigan Education Association Spring Representative Assembly met on April 25 & 26.  Most of the RAs from Local 1’s 6-E Coordinating Council were in attendance.

 

One of the annual highlights is presentation of the MEA Scholarships ($1300 new and $1000 continuing) given to public school students in Michigan.

 

The RA elected Iris Salters for president, Steve Cook for vice president, and, in the contested race, Peggy McLellan for secretary-treasurer.

 

Some other action items were:

 

1. The percentage (1.5 percent) and cap ($620) on MEA dues remained the same.

2. Three members of the Board of Directors may serve on a commission.

3. MEA president will develop a paper concerning of movement from State option to Local option.

4. Using the big screen at the RA to view short text.

5. To make the passage of SB 107 and HB 4162 an MEA priority.

6. Supporting the Grand Rapids EA to promote staff and student safety at the rally on May 3 in Grand Rapids.

7. Authorized expenditures to assist the Southfield MESPA unit in crisis activities.

8. Adopted the 2008-2009 budget as presented.
