On June 2nd we held a Local 1 Bargaining Workshop. In attendance were over 70 local bargainers from the 13 Local 1 districts whose contracts have either expired or will expire with the end of August. Speaking for the MEA:
Teri Battaglieri speaking on crisis preparation “Better to be over prepared for a crisis and not have one than the other way around.”
Lu Battaglieri, MEA Executive Director, speaking about the real change in Michigan’s demographics and the drain of young, educated people to other states. “Giving more and more tax abatements are not the answer to Michigan’s economy.”
Ruth Beier, MEA’s Economist. School districts are unwise in spending general funds when bond issues and sinking funds could be used.
Local 1’s Crisis Chair, Pauline Anderson (Romeo) spoke briefly about the upcoming crisis meetings. “Having the ability to reach all your teachers during the summer is important.”
Most of the districts bargaining have already begun talking with the mutual board teams and the pace will pick up even more now with school finished.
Bargaining is never easy. Everything teachers have is won in the bargaining arena. Everything we do in our unions, especially political involvement, leads all teachers to this point, bargaining a good, fair, and equitable contract. Bargaining also involves compromise – compromise on both sides.
This will prove to be a very interesting summer. Stay tuned!
