The Local 1 office, like so much of the country, is constantly buzzing with everything having to do with politics. Sharon Bullock and Michael Wasielewski, the MEA Field Assistants, are working on correcting addresses and phone numbers to contact our members, as well as, processing the large number of PAC forms turned in already. (An interesting political “caveat” is the Michigan Republican courts reinforced the ruling that MEA members cannot choose to have payroll deductions, which had been previously approved. One more reason why politics is important!)
The Local 1 staff, Sue Hoard, Rick Flynn, Dan Hoekenga, and Jane Cassady continue to work not only on political involvement, but also, the off-shot of it, bargaining and maintaining local contracts. The contracts achieved in our districts are partly the product of our school boards. Again, this is why it is so important to have MEA membership involvement in school board elections, as well as, all other elections.
In the next few weeks, you, the MEA members, will be asked to volunteer some time (leafleting or phone calling) to ensure the election of pro-public education candidates! You can, as always, make the difference. Sign up now (Volunteer Form), and be part of the future!
