  • IN THE EARLY PART OF THE 20TH CENTURY, LEWIS HINE ATTEMPTED TO DRAW ATTENTION TO CHILD LABORERS WHO WERE LIVING AND WORKING IN DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS IN THE UNITED STATES AS A RESULT OF THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION THAT OCCURRED HERE IN THE US.  HE DID THIS THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHS THAT HE TOOK OF THE CHILDREN WORKING IN THE FACTORIES

AND TYPE OUT YOUR THOUGHTS OF WHAT A DAY WAS LIKE FOR THAT CHILD OR CHILDREN.  WRITE ABOUT TWO PARAGRAPHS DESCRIBING THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN YOUR LIFE AND THEIR LIFE.  INCLUDE HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED.  SPELLING, GRAMMAR AND CONTENT WILL BE GRADED.

    1.    Words and phrases: "assembly line," 'Little Tramp," union, communist, Gamin.
    2.    What do you think this film is trying to tell us about the effect of machines on our lives?
    3.    Why did the Little Tramp want to stay in jail a little longer?
    4.    At the beginning of the movie the Gamin was stealing bananas to feed her younger sisters. Was this right?
    5.    Did the Little Tramp do the right thing by letting the Gamin into the department store?
    6.    Why was there no talking in the movie? How did it affect your ability to understand it?
    7.    Who was responsible for the death of the father?
    8.    At the end of the movie where were the Little Tramp and the Gamin going? Why were they going there?
