This message is from MEA President Steve Cook:

Another week, and the fight continues.

Late last week we learned that the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) agrees with MEA and opposes the so-called Pavlov “Reform” bills (618-624). Continue to have conversations with local school board members, superintendents and PTO groups.

We also learned that the attacks on MEA members will continue. We’ve received word Republicans are dusting off their bill which would further their attempts to reduce MEA members and locals to second class citizen status by prohibiting MEA locals from using public schools for meetings. You know, the schools our tax dollars pay for? Republicans would still rather continue to punish school employees than address jobs and improve public education.

Sen. Richardville still hasn’t introduced Right to Work For Less for school employees only.

Last week, we asked you and your members to contact your state legislators and have you ever! You were also asked to send me copies (at stcook@mea.org) of those e-mails. This lets us know when you call or talk to your policy makers. My inbox has overflowed! Thanks go out to you and your members who took the time to send comments to your Representatives and Senators.

While we do everything we can here to publicize the danger to neighborhood schools and public education in the media, we still need local members and leaders to keep the pressure on legislators to reinforce that when MEA says we are opposed to poor legislation, that we really do speak on behalf of thousands of members statewide. Don’t let them get away with saying that our members don’t care because they aren’t hearing from you.

Keep the pressure on.
