You Have Rights.
Don’t give them up ... call MAHE first
By Cheryll Conklin, MEA Uniserv

Every union employee has a right not provided to non-unionized employees called “Weingarten Rights.” Under Weingarten, unionized employees are allowed to have union representation in any meeting with a supervisor or Human Resources representative where discipline might result. During the past few weeks, we have experienced occasions when LCC supervisors have not advised employees of these rights. Unfortunately this has resulted in HUGE problems for the employees involved.

It is important for you to know that you must DEMAND your Weingarten rights.

Therefore, if you are called to a meeting with any supervisor or Human Resources representative, and you think discipline may be discussed, tell the supervisor or Human Resources representative that you want union representation and call MAHE at 517-483-1891 or e-mail mahe@lcc.edu and/or MAHE Grievance Chair Marc Thomas at marctho@gmail.com to request representation. If the supervisor or Human Resources representative will not allow you representative or will not reschedule the meeting, DEMAND that they inform you of this denial in writing.

If you go to a meeting with a supervisor or Human Resources rep and the issue of discipline comes up during the meeting, STOP the meeting and tell the supervisor or Human Resources representative that you want UNION REPRESENTATION and call MAHE. Again, if the meeting is not stopped and you are not allowed to get union representation, again DEMAND that the supervisor or Human Resources representative put his/her refusal in writing.
