Collaboration First. Grievance Second.

“The College recognizes the intrinsic value of all faculty to the work of the college …
this agreement is intended to contribute to an environment of mutual respect,
collaboration, and shared decision making.”

– Lansing Community College’s 2005-2010 collective bargaining agreement

With this new language comes a new era of partnership between faculty and administration at LCC. There are bumps and bends along this new path, but MAHE is committed to working collaboratively to continue making our institution a better place for learning and teaching.

The new contract includes two important procedural changes:

• A grievance must be filed within 30 calendar days of the event giving rise to the grievance. This provides additional time for a member and administrator to work through issues informally, but still means that members who have a concern or question about whether the contract is being violated must act ASAP, or risk losing the opportunity to fix a problem.

• The Level III grievance hearing, the last step before arbitration, is now heard by a team of three faculty members and three administrators. The faculty association and administrators have assembled several of these teams so far under the new contract, with the faculty member achieving some or all of their demands in each case.

Unfortunately, some grievances are the result of inappropriate discipline against a faculty member. We have seen a disturbing trend in some campus divisions where an administrator calls a faculty member into an “informational” meeting, but presents a “concern” that could result in discipline. You have a right to have MAHE representation at any meeting that could result in discipline.

If an “informational” meeting becomes disciplinary, take the following steps:

• Ask that the meeting be stopped and rescheduled for a time when a MAHE representative can attend with you.

• If the administrator refuses your request, demand the refusal of faculty association representation in writing.

• Contact the MAHE Office at 483-1891 and ask for help.

If a meeting is scheduled with an administrator and you are not sure if you need MAHE representation, contact us. We can help you figure it out.

Q. Who do I contact first to ask a question or discuss my situation?
A. Your first point of contact should be the MAHE office at (517) 483-1891 or e-mail them at  mahe@lcc.edu. We'll put you in touch with a grievance committee representative who will assist you with continuing issues.

Q. I have been asked to attend a meeting with my chair. Do I go alone?
A. NO! Make contact with the MAHE office and we will try to get a fellow-member to accompany you into your meeting. They will take notes for you.

Q. What if I do have to file a grievance...who will help with that?
A. Should it be necessary after discussing your situation, the grievance committee member will work in in conjunction with our Uniserv Director Cheryll Conklin to construct and file a grievance for you.
