Here are the private scholarships that are
available through the Byron High School Counseling Office. Applicants must
be graduating in June 2012 unless noted. Scholarships
are listed in order by the date that the scholarships are due or must be
postmarked.
Wendy's High School Heisman...due 5 pm CST, Oct. 2,
2011
Criteria: Honors both male and
female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student
leadership. Applicants must be high school seniors who have at least a
B (3.0 GPA) average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.

Horatio Alger Scholarship Program...due
Oct. 30, 2011
Amount: Scholarships range from
$2,500 - $20,000
Criteria: For high school seniors that are
planning to enter college in
Fall 2012 with the intention of completing a Bachelors degree; exhibit
critical financial need; involved in co-curricular and community activities;
and have a 2.0 minimum GPA. Applications can be submitted online at

3rd Annual "Freedom in Academia" Student Essay
Contest...due Nov. 5, 2011
Amount: First place = $5,000, Second
place = $2,500, Five Runners Up = $1,000
Criteria: High school seniors
write an in-depth (800-1000 words) explaining why free speech and First
Amendment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these
rights harm the college experience. Go to

AXA Achievement Scholarship...Dec. 1, 2011
Amount: Scholarships of $10,000 (one
for each State) and $25,000 (one for each State)
Criteria: Applicants must show
ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self,

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student
Scholarships...due Dec. 2, 2011
Amount: 500 scholarships are awarded
valued from $60,000 for first place to $4,000 for the lowest level
Criteria: Applications are
judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. MVS scholars
are outstanding students who are at or near the top of their class, active
in school and community activities, and recognized as leaders by their

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards...due Dec. 15,
2011
Amount: 100 scholarships worth
$1,000 to $10,000
Criteria: Qualified candidates must
be operating a small business. All applicants must be nominated by a
dues-paying member of NFIB. The selection committee will consider the
applicants’ academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership, and
character. Evidence of entrepreneurial spirit and initiative in running
their business will be heavily weighted. Financial need is not a factor.
BK Scholars Awards...due Jan. 10, 2012
Amount: $1,000 awards; 3 $50,000
James W. McLamore WHOPPER awards; 1 $25,000 King award; up to 4 $5,000
regional awards
Criteria: There are a couple
of different levels of GPA requirements--the general (non-employee) track
must have a 2.5 minimum GPA while the employee track must have a 2.0 minimum
GPA. High school seniors, Burger King employees, and children of
Burger King employees are eligible to apply. Go to

Guy Wilson Scholarship...due Jan. 16, 2012
Amount: $500
Criteria: Available only to
Michigan high school seniors who are a son, daughter, grandchild or
great-grandchild of a war-time veteran (see below chart) planning to attend
any Michigan accredited college or university. Applicants must
have a minimum 2.5 GPA, financial need, proof of parent's or grandparent's
honorable active war-time military service, and statement of goals and

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program...due Feb. 8,
2012
Amount: Up to $20,000 (up to $5,000
per year renewable) for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board
Criteria: High school seniors
must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, enroll in a public college or university
within your legal state of residence, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, be
a US citizen or permanent resident, and demonstrate financial need.

Amount: Last year, 36 scholarships
(20 to high school seniors and 16 to returning college students) totaling
$36,000 were awarded
Criteria: Selection based on:
academic achievement, school/community service, extracurricular activities,
and all other criteria being equal, first consideration will be given to
children of MEA members and students from lower income households.
Students must attend a Michigan public college or university or vocational
training institution that grants a degree, certification or license.

scholarships totaling $4 million

laptop to all 1st place winners in 4th - 10th grades; and 1 family field

2012 Shell Oil Company Technical Scholarship...due

Amount: Twenty one-year awards of
$2,500
Criteria: For graduating high
school seniors enrolling in engineering or geosciences at universities
identified by Shell (including MSU and U of M Ann Arbor). Upon
successful completion of first year studies and other criteria established
by Shell, the recipient may be eligible to receive a four-year renewable
award of $5,000 annually. Applicants must plan to enroll full-time in
geology, geophysics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical
engineering, geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mechanical

Criteria: For two seniors from
a high school within Memorial Healthcare Center's service area that pursue

Byron Masonic Scholarship...due to Mrs. Smith by
March 16, 2012
Criteria: Applicants must show
strong academics as well as participation in extra-curricular activities
(either in school or out of school). Financial need, reference
letters, ACT scores, GPA and a personal statement will be taken in to
consideration.
*IMPORTANT--there is a different date on the
scholarship...ignore it. Those are Lodge deadlines...the application
must be submitted directly to the Lodge or Mrs. Smith by March 16*

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the
Year (SAMMY) 2012 Award Program...due online by Mar. 19, 2012
Amount: 25 winners will
receive a $7,500 college scholarship, an invitation for winners,
parents/guardians to attend a SAMMY 2012 awards weekend at Walt Disney World
in Orlando, FL in June 2012, and an opportunity to be pictured in a special
congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in a June 2012 edition of USA TODAY.
Criteria:
Teachers, coaches, principals, counselors, athletic directors, parents and
relatives are encouraged to nominate a scholar athlete for the SAMMY 2012
Award. Additionally, all high school seniors may self-nominate
themselves for the award. Judging of the nominees will be based on
five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%),
leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience essay (5%).

Shiawassee Women's Association of Today & Tomorrow (S.W.A.T.T.)
Scholarships...due Mar. 24, 2012
Amount: Two $500 scholarships
Criteria: Applicants must be
pursuing further education in a professional career, seeking financial need,
and in good scholastic standing (at least average grades).

Delta Kappa Gamma/Alpha Eta Chapter
Grant...due Mar. 26, 2012
Amount: One scholarship
worth at least $200 (or it can be evenly divided between two recipients)
Criteria:
Applicants must be a female graduate from Clinton or Shiawassee County high
schools pursuing a degree in education. Applicants must have average
or above average grades.

AAA Michigan School Safety Patrol Scholarship...due
to Mrs. Smith by March 30, 2012 (who will then forward one nominee to AAA by
their deadline)
Amount: Two $1,000 scholarships
Criteria: For seniors that
served as AAA School Safety Patrol members in Michigan. Students must
documented proof of AAA Michigan Safety Patrol participation, good academic
standing (3.0 or better GPA and 21 or better ACT) and a strong record of
participation in the community and extra-curricular activities. See

Voorhies Scholarship...postmark deadline Mar.
31, 2012
Amount: Varies depending on need
Criteria: Applicants must have
a 3.0 GPA and live in Genesee or Shiawassee Counties. Awards are
generally based on financial need, but extra-curricular activities, GPA, and
awards are also considered.

Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) Scholarship
Competition...due Apr. 2, 2012
Amount: at least 30 scholarships of
$1000 each
Criteria: Awards are NOT based
on financial need. Applicants, or a parent, must be employed at a
business that is a member of MRA. The application can be found online

Michigan Oil & Gas Producers Education Foundation
Scholarship...due Apr. 2, 2012
Amount: At least $500
Criteria: Applicants must have been
accepted for enrollment at a Michigan university or community college, have
a minimum 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need. Applicants must
also be pursuing a degree in a field of study which will allow them to
obtain full time employment in the crude oil and natural gas industry.

Thomas Michael Jennings Foundation Scholarship...due
Apr. 14, 2012
Amount: $2,500
Criteria: For any student who
wishes to enroll in any undergraduate, graduate, or professional program
(including current college students). The scholarship is not
restricted to a particular field of study. The Foundation will be
looking at academic achievement, character, and community service when
considering a candidate.

James Oliver Curwood Scholarship Award...due
Apr. 15, 2012
Amount: $750
Criteria: This scholarship is
open to any graduate of a Shiawassee County school; the parent must be a
resident of Shiawassee County. Criteria to be used in selecting
recipients include: financial need, a GPA that may have prevented recipient
of other scholarships, completion of application, recent transcript, and
work experience. The application should be typed or written with a
black pen. The application is available at

Byron Area PTA Scholarship...due May 4, 2012
Amount: $500
Criteria: Applicants must be a
Byron High School senior who plans to attend college and has shown a
commitment to their community through volunteer hours. Submit the
completed application to Mrs. Smith who will then forward it to the Byron
PTA president.
