Here are the private scholarships that are available through the Byron High School Counseling Office.  Applicants must be graduating in June 2012 unless noted.  Scholarships are listed in order by the date that the scholarships are due or must be postmarked.

Wendy's High School Heisman...due 5 pm CST, Oct. 2, 2011

Criteria:     Honors both male and female high school students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.  Applicants must be high school seniors who have at least a B (3.0 GPA) average and participate in at least one school-sponsored sport.  To apply, go online to www.wendysheisman.com.

Horatio Alger Scholarship Program...due Oct. 30, 2011

Amount:    Scholarships range from $2,500 - $20,000

Criteria:     For high school seniors that are planning to enter college in Fall 2012 with the intention of completing a Bachelors degree; exhibit critical financial need; involved in co-curricular and community activities; and have a 2.0 minimum GPA.  Applications can be submitted online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.

3rd Annual  "Freedom in Academia" Student Essay Contest...due Nov. 5, 2011

Amount:    First place = $5,000, Second place = $2,500, Five Runners Up = $1,000

Criteria:     High school seniors write an in-depth (800-1000 words) explaining why free speech and First Amendment rights are crucial to higher education and how abuses of these rights harm the college experience.  Go to www.thefire.org/contests for more information and detailed directions.

AXA Achievement Scholarship...Dec. 1, 2011

Amount:    Scholarships of $10,000 (one for each State) and $25,000 (one for each State)

Criteria:     Applicants must show ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals, respect for self, family and community and the ability to succeed in college.  Learn more and apply online at www.axa-achievement.com.

Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Scholarships...due Dec. 2, 2011

Amount:    500 scholarships are awarded valued from $60,000 for first place to $4,000 for the lowest level

Criteria:     Applications are judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need.  MVS scholars are outstanding students who are at or near the top of their class, active in school and community activities, and recognized as leaders by their peers.  For complete details and applications, go to www.elks.org/enf/scholars .  All applications must go through a local Elks Lodge before reaching the Elks National Foundation office.

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Awards...due Dec. 15, 2011

Amount:    100 scholarships worth $1,000 to $10,000

Criteria:    Qualified candidates must be operating a small business. All applicants must be nominated by a dues-paying member of NFIB.  The selection committee will consider the applicants’ academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership, and character. Evidence of entrepreneurial spirit and initiative in running their business will be heavily weighted. Financial need is not a factor.

BK Scholars Awards...due Jan. 10, 2012

Amount:    $1,000 awards; 3 $50,000 James W. McLamore WHOPPER awards; 1 $25,000 King award; up to 4 $5,000 regional awards

Criteria:     There are a couple of different levels of GPA requirements--the general (non-employee) track must have a 2.5 minimum GPA while the employee track must have a 2.0 minimum GPA.  High school seniors, Burger King employees, and children of Burger King employees are eligible to apply.  Go to www.haveityourwayfoundation.org/bksp_scholarship_eligibility.html for information and how to apply.

Guy Wilson Scholarship...due Jan. 16, 2012

Amount:    $500

Criteria:     Available only to Michigan high school seniors who are a son, daughter, grandchild or great-grandchild of a war-time veteran (see below chart) planning to attend any Michigan accredited college or university.  Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, financial need, proof of parent's or grandparent's honorable active war-time military service, and statement of goals and intentions.  Go to http://www.michiganlegion.org/scholarships/wilson.html for information and application.

William D. & Jewell Brewer Scholarship...due Jan. 16, 2012

Amount:    $500

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) U.S. Scholarship Program...due Jan. 27, 2012

Criteria:     Scholarships are available for students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community involvement.  Go to www.rmhc.org for complete program details and eligibility requirements.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship...due Feb. 1, 2012

Amount:    up to 375 $2,000 winners nationwide

Elks National Foundation Legacy Awards...due Feb. 1, 2012

Amount:    250 scholarships worth $4,000

Criteria:     For children and grandchildren of Elks members.  Applicants will be judged on the core Elks values: knowledge, charity, community service, and integrity.  For complete details and applications, go to www.elks.org/enf/scholars .

KFC Colonel's Scholars Program...due Feb. 8, 2012

Amount:    Up to $20,000 (up to $5,000 per year renewable) for tuition, fees, textbooks, room and board

Criteria:     High school seniors must have a minimum 2.75 GPA, enroll in a public college or university within your legal state of residence, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, be a US citizen or permanent resident, and demonstrate financial need.  Apply online at www.kfcscholars.org

Shiawassee Community Foundation Scholarships...due Feb. 10, 2012

All applications can be found on the Foundation's website at www.shiawasseefoundation.org.  I have listed below the applications that are applicable to Byron students.  For other districts, go directly to their website.

Rollin V. Dasen Memorial Scholarship

  • Applicants must be Shiawassee County high school seniors
  • Applicants must be planning to attend MSU and pursue a degree in either the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, College of Education, College of Arts and Letters, or College of Natural Science -OR- planning to attend CMU to pursue a degree in the either the College of Communication and Fine Arts or College of Education and Human Services
  • Applicants must demonstrate good character and community service
  • Financial need will be considered

Drew Decker Memorial Scholarship

  • For Shiawassee County High School students or graduates

  • Applicants must be pursuing a career in the music field or to attend band camp

  • Not grade point sensitive

  • Financial need will be considered

Alford and Alice Emmert Scholarship

  • Students of any state accredited public or private high school in Shiawassee County who have spent the majority of their secondary school years in the County

  • This scholarship shall be awarded only to students attending a four year accredited college or university

  • The following list of studies, in order of priority, may be funded by this scholarship:

o   Agriculture

o   Forestry

o   Hard Sciences (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, etc)

o   Natural Sciences

o   Biology

o   Veterinary Medicine

o   Economics

o   International Studies/History

o   Computer Sciences

  • Excluded from consideration for this scholarship:

o   Pre-Law/Law, Pre-Medicine/Medicine, Political Science, Sociology, Psychology, Athletics/Sports

  • Financial need will be considered 

  • Applicants shall have career goals, be of good character and well-motivated as demonstrated by the following:

o   Seriousness of intent to attend college by a course of study in high school appropriate to the preparation for college

o   A history of summer or part time employment in an effort to fund part of their own higher education expenses

o   Evidence of self-motivation by such things as activities, hobbies, and interests that teach skills or advance learning

o   Academic achievement sufficient to successfully meet the challenges of education beyond the high school level.  A high GPA is not to be stressed as primary criteria

o   Involvement in volunteer work in their community, neighborhood, church or school

o   The intent to enroll as a full time student in more than the minimum number of credits per semester or term in college

o   Leadership ability in their community, church or school

 

Edward W. Flynn Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Shiawassee County High School Senior

  • Planning to major in the field of natural resource conservation; including but not limited to aquatic sciences and/or forestry.

  • Financial need will be considered.

 

Cyril and Ella M. Gregoricka Scholarship

  • Shiawassee County High School Senior

  • Planning to study either environmental engineering or agriculture

  • Demonstrates civic responsibility, compassion and concern for others, good character and value system

  • Financial need will be considered

  • Involvement in FFA (only for students applying for the agriculture scholarship)

 

Clarence S. Hood Memorial Scholarship

  • Must be Education Majors – particularly those aspiring to be History/Social Studies Teachers on the secondary level of public schools

  • Graduates of a High School in Shiawassee County (preference given to Owosso High Students and Alumni)

  • Financial need will be considered

  • GPA may be average or higher

 

Kris Marie Kulhanek Memorial Scholarship

  • Graduate of a Shiawassee County High School

  • Preference will be given to students studying Agriscience and members of 4-H

 

Jill Malzahn Memorial Health Fund

  • Shiawassee County High School students planning on going into the medical field

  • Financial need not essential, but will be considered

 

Nathan Nover Memorial Scholarship

  • Graduate of a High School in Shiawassee County

  • Pursuing further education in the accounting or medical field

  • Grade point average of 3.0 or higher

  • Be active in at least one extracurricular activity

 

Paul Penjaska Family Scholarship

  • Graduates of a High School in Shiawassee County (college students must have completed a minimum of two years at an accredited Michigan private or public college or trade school)

  • Financial need will be considered

  • Preference given to those studying physical sciences (defined as any of the natural sciences that deal primarily with non-living materials such as physics, chemistry and astronomy), trades or engineering

 

David A. Reed Agricultural Scholarship

  • Shiawassee County High School Seniors

  • Pursuing further education at an accredited institution in the field of agriculture

 

 Evan James Reed Memorial Scholarship

The recipient(s) shall attend any Shiawassee County High School and intend to pursue further education at an accredited institution in the field of special education to aid the mentally or physically challenged/impaired.  The recipient(s) should have academic performance that would indicate success at the college level and may re-apply in conjunction with an interview.  It is not intended to be grade point sensitive or financial need directed.

Bill and Kay Scarlett Memorial Scholarship

  • Shiawassee County High School Graduates that plan on furthering their education at an accredited college or university within a two year period after high school graduation.

  • Financial need will be considered

  • Candidates should demonstrate a grade point average that would predict success in the completion of a degree program

 

Cheryl L. Hrcka Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • Shiawassee County Catholic Religious Education High School Seniors planning on furthering their education at a college, trade school, or religious education program.

  • A member in good standing of a Shiawassee County Catholic Church

  • A good citizen with high moral character

  • A grade point average to assure the likelihood of completing a college education

  • Priority will be given to students actively involved in the youth group of their church

  • Financial need will be considered

 

Durand St. Mary's K of C Council 7955 Scholarship

  • Student of Durand St. Mary’s Catholic Church

  • Student’s family must be a member in good standing of Durand St. Mary’s Catholic Church

  • Demonstrate leadership in the parish and community

  • Acceptance and attendance at an accredited educational institution

  • Award is merit based without regard for family income and is renewable

  • Candidates may be interviewed

 

Durand Lions Club Scholarship

  • Durand or Byron High School Graduates

  • Preference given to applicants pursuing a career in ophthalmology or audiology or are visually or hearing impaired themselves

 

Iris (Turk) Lott CMU Library Science Scholarship

  • Durand or Byron High School Graduates

  • Must have at least a “B” average

  • Specializing in Library Science at Central Michigan University

  • Financial need will be considered

  

Byron Community Scholarships

  • Byron High School Graduates

  • Planning to attend an accredited trade/vocational school or college

  • Community service

  • Good grade point average

  • Financial need will be considered

 

Robert J. Cole Memorial Scholarship

  • Byron High School Seniors

  • Financial need will be considered

 

 Roger and Marian Talbot Family Scholarship

  • Byron High School Seniors and Alumni currently attending college

  • Preference is given to those students attending Baker College, Central Michigan University, Ferris State University, Lansing Community College or Michigan State University

 

Kailey Elizabeth Jordan Memorial Scholarship

To award grants to accredited Michigan horse camps to allow Michigan handicapped or terminally ill children (ages 16 and under) who love horses and who would benefit from therapeutic horseback riding. 

Michigan Education Association Scholarship...due Feb. 10, 2012

Amount:    Last year, 36 scholarships (20 to high school seniors and 16 to returning college students) totaling $36,000 were awarded

Criteria:     Selection based on: academic achievement, school/community service, extracurricular activities, and all other criteria being equal, first consideration will be given to children of MEA members and students from lower income households.  Students must attend a Michigan public college or university or vocational training institution that grants a degree, certification or license.  Mrs. Smith has paper applications, but applications can be obtained at http://www.mea.org/awards/meascholarship.html.

Best Buy Scholarship Program...due Feb. 15, 2012

Amount:    1,200 scholarships of $1,000 each

Criteria:     For students in grades 9 - 12.  Students need solid grades plus community service or work experience.  Apply online at www.bestbuy-communityrelations.com or www.at15.com.

National Co-op Scholarships...postmark deadline Feb. 15, 2012

Amount:    There are 155 merit scholarships totaling $4 million

Criteria:     Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and have completed all required admissions applications materials and be accepted at one of the WACE partner institutions (Drexel U, Johnson & Wales U, Kettering U, Rochester Institute of Technology, U of Cincinnati, U of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Technology).  For a scholarship application or to complete your application online, go to www.co-op.edu.

GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program...due Feb. 17, 2012

Amount:    There are 20 scholarships worth $10,000 (renewable up to $40,000)

Criteria:     For college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship.  Go to www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships for an online application.

Kroger's "I Can Make History" contest...due Feb. 24, 2012

Amount:    Prizes in each category include 2 scholarships ($2,000 and $500) to 1st and 2nd place in 12th grade; 2 scholarships ($2,000 and $500) to 1st and 2nd place in 11th grade; 1 laptop to all 1st place winners in 4th - 10th grades; and 1 family field trip pack to all 2nd place winners in 4th - 10th grades

Criteria:     In celebration of Black History Month, prizes will be given in the categories of art, essay, music and poetry.  Visit www.icanmakehistory.com for more information and to download application forms.  All entries must be the student's original work which address one of two themes: "How are you and/or your community making history?" or "What does Black History Month mean to me?"

2012 Shell Oil Company Technical Scholarship...due Feb. 28, 2012

Amount:    Twenty one-year awards of $2,500

Criteria:     For graduating high school seniors enrolling in engineering or geosciences at universities identified by Shell (including MSU and U of M Ann Arbor).  Upon successful completion of first year studies and other criteria established by Shell, the recipient may be eligible to receive a four-year renewable award of $5,000 annually.  Applicants must plan to enroll full-time in geology, geophysics, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mechanical engineering, or petroleum engineering.  The application is available for download at http://goo.gl/HQSIY under the "high school seniors" tab.

Buick Achievers Scholarship Program...due Feb. 29, 2012

Amount:    100 scholarships of up to $25,000 per year (renewable for up to 5 years) -PLUS- an additional 1000 scholarships of $2,000 one-time awards

Criteria:     Applicants must be planning to attend college full-time in 2012-13 and planning to major in a field of study that focuses on engineering, technology, design or business with an interest in the automotive industry.  Go to www.buickachievers.com to apply and for more information.

Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation...due Mar. 1, 2012

Amount:    $2,000

Criteria:     Winners are selected on the basis of leadership, scholarship, financial need, and dedication to the civil rights principles of Rosa L. Parks, whose historic stand against racial prejudice in 1955 brought her national recognition.  Applicants must have a 2.5 minimum GPA, describe financial need, and document community activities.  See the application at www.rosaparksscholarshipfoundation.org for other criteria.

Byron Masonic Scholarship...due to Mrs. Smith by March 16, 2012

Criteria:     Applicants must show strong academics as well as participation in extra-curricular activities (either in school or out of school).  Financial need, reference letters, ACT scores, GPA and a personal statement will be taken in to consideration.

*IMPORTANT--there is a different date on the scholarship...ignore it.  Those are Lodge deadlines...the application must be submitted directly to the Lodge or Mrs. Smith by March 16*

Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) 2012 Award Program...due online by Mar. 19, 2012

Amount:    25 winners will receive a $7,500 college scholarship, an invitation for winners, parents/guardians to attend a SAMMY 2012 awards weekend at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL in June 2012, and an opportunity to be pictured in a special congratulatory Milk Mustache ad in a June 2012 edition of USA TODAY.

Criteria:     Teachers, coaches, principals, counselors, athletic directors, parents and relatives are encouraged to nominate a scholar athlete for the SAMMY 2012 Award.  Additionally, all high school seniors may self-nominate themselves for the award.  Judging of the nominees will be based on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience essay (5%).  Applications will be accepted online at www.sammyapplication.com.

Shiawassee Women's Association of Today & Tomorrow (S.W.A.T.T.) Scholarships...due Mar. 24, 2012

Amount:    Two $500 scholarships

Criteria:     Applicants must be pursuing further education in a professional career, seeking financial need, and in good scholastic standing (at least average grades).

Delta Kappa Gamma/Alpha Eta Chapter Grant...due Mar. 26, 2012

Amount:    One scholarship worth at least $200 (or it can be evenly divided between two recipients)

Criteria:     Applicants must be a female graduate from Clinton or Shiawassee County high schools pursuing a degree in education.  Applicants must have average or above average grades.

AAA Michigan School Safety Patrol Scholarship...due to Mrs. Smith by March 30, 2012 (who will then forward one nominee to AAA by their deadline)

Amount:    Two $1,000 scholarships

Criteria:     For seniors that served as AAA School Safety Patrol members in Michigan.  Students must documented proof of AAA Michigan Safety Patrol participation, good academic standing (3.0 or better GPA and 21 or better ACT) and a strong record of participation in the community and extra-curricular activities.  See Mrs. Smith for an application.

Voorhies Scholarship...postmark deadline Mar. 31, 2012

Amount:    Varies depending on need

Criteria:     Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and live in Genesee or Shiawassee Counties.  Awards are generally based on financial need, but extra-curricular activities, GPA, and awards are also considered.

Michigan Retailers Association (MRA) Scholarship Competition...due Apr. 2, 2012

Amount:    at least 30 scholarships of $1000 each

Criteria:     Awards are NOT based on financial need.  Applicants, or a parent, must be employed at a business that is a member of MRA.  The application can be found online at www.retailers.com (access code MIRA) or you can call 800-366-3699 for an application.

Michigan Oil & Gas Producers Education Foundation Scholarship...due Apr. 2, 2012

Amount:    At least $500

Criteria:    Applicants must have been accepted for enrollment at a Michigan university or community college, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.  Applicants must also be pursuing a degree in a field of study which will allow them to obtain full time employment in the crude oil and natural gas industry.  Go to www.mogpef.org for an application.

Thomas Michael Jennings Foundation Scholarship...due Apr. 14, 2012

Amount:    $2,500

Criteria:     For any student who wishes to enroll in any undergraduate, graduate, or professional program (including current college students).  The scholarship is not restricted to a particular field of study.  The Foundation will be looking at academic achievement, character, and community service when considering a candidate.

James Oliver Curwood Scholarship Award...due Apr. 15, 2012

Amount:    $750

Criteria:     This scholarship is open to any graduate of a Shiawassee County school; the parent must be a resident of Shiawassee County.  Criteria to be used in selecting recipients include: financial need, a GPA that may have prevented recipient of other scholarships, completion of application, recent transcript, and work experience.  The application should be typed or written with a black pen.  The application is available at www.shiawasseecountyhistsoc.org.

Byron Area PTA Scholarship...due May 4, 2012

Amount:    $500

Criteria:     Applicants must be a Byron High School senior who plans to attend college and has shown a commitment to their community through volunteer hours.  Submit the completed application to Mrs. Smith who will then forward it to the Byron PTA president.
